If you’ve been surfing the internet recently, you’ve probably heard about spyware. Nobody wants it on their computer and anyone surfing without protection can get it. So what are you supposed to do about it? Keep reading.
What is Spyware and how is it spread?
Spyware is a sneaky way to get information to you and about you usually for the purposes of marketing. Spyware can often be installed on your computer without your knowledge where is secretly runs in the background gathering information about the sites you visit and sending it back to its maker. Some spyware even manipulates your computer, launching pop-ups, spying on passwords and changing your search results when you use an engine to find information. It is a devious form of advertising.
Spyware does not spread the way a virus does (which is what keeps it legal). It has to be installed on your computer by an actual person, but the makers of spyware often trick you into installing it yourself. When you are browsing a website and have to download software or a plug-in to utilize it, you may be downloading spyware. How often do you read all of the license agreements that you are required to agree to when installing something?
The most common form of spyware is that which comes bundled with software you actually want. Many free downloads contain spyware in the program which is cleverly hidden. This irritating advertising software comes on free programs that interest people such as Weatherbug, Comet Cursor and Kazaa. You may think you are just getting the local weather forecast or a fun new gadget, but you are actually getting much more than you bargained for.
Spyware isn’t actually designed to hurt your computer. A couple pieces of spyware will probably remain unnoticeable, but get a bunch and you will notice. Download a poorly written piece of spyware or get two that conflict and you’re in trouble. They will drain your computers resources and spyware that’s “buggy” will freeze up your computer. Your may have unexpected crashes, reboots and begin notice your system is running slower and slower.
